Periodontal treatment is the ‘deep cleaning’, in areas below the gum-line, that aims to remove plaque and tartar..
It is usually performed under local anaesthetic and is completed in 2 sessions. Firstly, necessary measurements are taken that determine the severity of the disease and estimate the success of the treatment. Upon completion of the treatment, the patient is reviewed after a month and a new series of measurements is taken that shows the overall tissue response to the treatment and any areas where further treatment could be required.
The success of the periodontal treatment relies significantly upon the good level of patient’s oral hygiene and also upon frequent patient recalls (usually in 6-month intervals) which prevent possible re-lapse of the disease
